Like the tony East Coast hideaways of Montauk and Nantucket, Kiawah Island was named for the Native Americans who originally settled there. Also like those resorts, today Kiawah is flush with multi-million-dollar vacation homes and business moguls dressed down on the golf course.
But you’d be hard pressed to find an alligator ambling along the dunes on a Nantucket beach, or a palm tree planted in Montauk’s sandy bluffs. Kiawah has both exotic species in abundance, along with a steamy climate and lush green woods draped with Spanish moss, which line the narrow bike paths and roads.
The differences don’t end there: unlike Montauk or Nantucket, Kiawah didn’t develop gradually from a secluded Native American settlement to a sought-after resort community. In fact, the island was privately owned for much of its 400-year history.
